Audre Lorde once said, “These places of possibility within ourselves are dark because they are ancient and hidden; they have survived and grown strong through darkness. Within these deep places, each one of us holds an incredible reserve of creativity and power, of unexamined and unrecorded emotion and feeling.” I choose to share this quote because of the sentiment of obscurity surrounding some of the most vital aspects of experience — the unexplainable reasons why we act, speak, create, believe. Through my practice, I explore this obscurity, in hopes of bringing my unknown routines, behaviors, and choices to light. As a metaphor for this existential examination, my work centers on elements of repetition and pattern, using multiple mediums (most frequently drawing, printing, and sculpture) and a combination of representative images and abstract forms. Through this focus on process, my work becomes meditative, letting go of surface-level thoughts and feelings to allow myself to discover deeper objectives. My goal is to turn myself inside out, and converge upon understanding the ancient, unrecorded emotions that Lorde describes. Often moody and cerebral, I attempt to find a balance between control and freedom, an integration of unspoken questions and answers. I hope that my work gives viewers a feeling of opportunity or permission for unfamiliar truths to emerge.
